The 334th—successor to the RAF's No. 71 Eagle Squadron—evolved from Spitfires to P-47 Thunderbolts before transitioning to P-51 Mustangs in 1944. Based at Debden Field, Essex, the "Fighting Eagles" became the top-scoring squadron of the 4th Fighter Group with 395 confirmed kills.
